Handling Data

Bath time with Archimedes

Key Stages 2 and 3: Age range 10 - 14

This simulation involves changing variables by selecting the strength of the water flow into the bath, turning the tap on or off, putting the plug in and out, and telling Archimedes to get in and out of the bath.

It has also been successfully used in Year 6 Science lessons to provide an opportunity to carry out experiments with several variables and interpret the data produced.

How to use the software:
The software can be used with a group of children. Ask questions such as:

"What happens to the depth of water when Archimedes gets in the bath?"
"Predict what the graph will look like when the tap is off and the plug is in".

The children can interpret graphs such as the one below:

This graph shows the depth of water in the bath. Explain it by describing what happened during the 100 seconds.

Bath time with Archimedes addresses the following objective from the National Numeracy Strategy :

Year 6
Begin to draw and interpret a line graph, in which intermediate values have a meaning.

Using and Applying maths
Children should be taught to:

  • search for a pattern in their results; develop logical thinking and explain their reasoning.

Handling Data
Children should be taught to:

  • select and use handling data skills when solving problems...
  • solve problems involving data.
  • recognise the difference between discrete and continuous data.
  • draw conclusions from statistics and graphs...

Pupils should explore and use a variety of resources and materials, including ICT.

Level 4
They construct and interpret line graphs.
