Number and Algebra

Again and Again

Age range 10 - 14 Key Stages 2 and 3.

Again and Again is an investigation involving decimals and fractions. A knowledge of the equivalence of decimals and fractions is needed. The investigation also requires the pupil to make generalisations; this could be done algebraically using words or formulae.

The activity could also be used as an ICT activity using a spreadsheet to carry out the calculations again and again.

Using the Again and Again investigation could assist in the teaching of the following

Years 5 and 6 example, Pages 30-31: Recognise the equivalence between decimals and fractions.

Years 5 and 6: Example: enter fractions into a calculator and interpret the display to find the equivalent decimal. Predict the result before confirming.

Key Stage 2 :

Number

Pupils should be taught to:

  • make connections in mathematics and appreciate the need to use numerical skills and knowledge when solving problems in other parts of the mathematics curriculum.
  • develop logical thinking.
  • break down a more complex problem or calculation into simpler steps before attempting a solution; identify the information needed to carry out the tasks.
  • understand and investigate general statements.
  • recognise the equivalence between the decimal and fraction forms of one half, quarters, tenths and hundredths.

Key Stage 3 :

Number

Pupils should be taught to:

  • break down a more complex problem or calculation into simpler steps before attempting to solve it.
  • make connections in mathematics and appreciate the need to use numerical skills and knowledge when solving problems in other parts of the mathematics curriculum.
  • show step-by-step deduction in solving a problem; explain and justify how they arrived at a conclusion.
  • use decimal notation and recognise that terminating decimal is a fraction.

Level 6
Pupils understand and use the equivalence between fractions and decimals.

Algebra

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Express simple functions, at first in words and then in symbols.

Level 5
They construct, express in symbolic form, and use simple formulae involving one or two operations.
Level 6
They represent mappings expressed algebraically.
